My Story...
Hi I’m Alex and I’m a marine engineer, while working out in the Caribbean in 2006 during some leisure time I went swimming and my whole life changed in an instant... I hit my head on a sand bank and broke my neck. The vertebrae at c5 fractured and c6 broke into three parts one of which damaged my spinal cord, leaving me paralysed from the chest down. More
Nu-drive

These are really good on the flat they work very well – not to good in a closed space tho.. they knock everything – my dad got in the chair pushed the levers harder then your ment to and it wheellied and he fell out!! so theres lots of power there.. its all your own power to :P
tomorrow im going to free wheel down a really steep hill – i “should” (south bank.. for those who know it) be able to control the speed i go down, you can break by pulling the lever’s in to you (this has always been a problem as you can imagine..) – then i’ll have a go pushing back up, this is some thing that i’ll need to master prior to walking, due to my house being built at the bottom of a steep hill – i’ve added a link to their site it has a video on there so you can see them – LINK

The agent nearest me is very close to Hastings, so took Tyler to the beach

a quick re-cap

Some good music, made by a friend of mine.. one song espesially – happy pill’s, of which i’m in the process of coming off.. this is a link to his site – LINK

Frogs legs..

I have been able to buy these “frog legs” they act as suspension for the front of the wheel chair, this allows me to go a bit further afield.. when i first came home from Aylsbury, i was being pushed home one day.. as we entered “old” bell lane, there is a sunken curb…. this stopped the chair instantly, causing me to fly straight out landing on my head (again) luckily due to the speed i was traveling it was only minor injuries sustained – with the “frog legs” i should be able to prevent this..

What would Jack Bauers do?

FES

This week i’m not having physio on Tuesday so it’s extreme RTI FES 300 Bike plus my standing chair so a few things to keep me going.. and as the weathers improving my tracker bike and soon swimming (not this week tho..May time) i will have these Nu-drive, they are levers that attach to the wheels and by pumping them they propel you forward.. making it 40% easier for me to move, really good when i live at the bottom of a big hill..

Physio

Today i did mat work once more, including four point balance (knees, elbows) kneeling, sitting balance, rolling and transfers. You really have to re-visit your youth when doing physio, the way a baby learns to use their muscles to roll, sit and walk… it’s exactly what i’m trying to do.. just at 29! (and with a cyst and a metal plate in my neck) just a little set back.

Again thank you everyone on the Ms Westerdam

PT in the AM

In the morning Stephen is back for some hard graft.. one of these day’s i’ll be walking! prior to that though i need to push myself to get there… some day’s more than others but the big thing.. as with any body – use it or lose it!

It’s just hard sometimes..

No one knows..

It is what drives people.. the need to know, the need to adapt.. already i can do more than what a C5/C6 SCI should be able to do.. and i’m not stopping yet..

i need to be independent… i need to stand on my own two feet once more

if you step into the ocean you don’t know whats beneath, but still you take that chance.. prior to my accident, i couldn’t just sit and sun bathe… i ended up going swimming, sometimes even going looking to see if there were sharks about, in the Caribbean there is always a good chance. No one knows

PT

Today i did mat work, including core stability, kneeling and four point balance (elbow and knee) followed by pushing round bluewater (local shopping centre), another thing i was told.. “you would never self propel.. and always be in your electric chair” i only used the electric chair for about 3 1/2 months and i can self propel (mainly on smooth surfaces at the moment) so….

who knows what will come….

I’m a hero

Although very tired.. i still did my 9.0 miles on the RTI 300 FES Bike.

Soon, once in my new build i will be able to get this new piece of equipment.. an “i joy ride”, due to the fact that it’s not marketed for the disabled, the price is a fraction of what it would be… i’ve found this all along.. (this is a big factor in people giving up.. purely because they can’t afford basic equipment) but with this “i joy ride” i will be able to maintain a more intense session… and this would greatly improve my sitting balance, core stability and posture. i would use it with my body harness to start, this will allow me to use it without my physio present.. just need space!!

i have a link to their site – LINK

(and unfortunately, as with everything money to build that space)
