My Story...
Hi I’m Alex and I’m a marine engineer, while working out in the Caribbean in 2006 during some leisure time I went swimming and my whole life changed in an instant... I hit my head on a sand bank and broke my neck. The vertebrae at c5 fractured and c6 broke into three parts one of which damaged my spinal cord, leaving me paralysed from the chest down. More
“go home and get on with your life.. this is you now”

“nothing more will come – you’ll never even roll in bed!”

What a load of bollocks!!

I’ve just finished yet another physio session.. standing/(assisted) walking… today i left off my leg braces (trial and error) to see how things would go, but found out that (for now) i still need them, they help to align my body on the treadmill, keeping my legs in more of a uniform walking pattern, also they help channel my weight down through my legs, this takes my weight off the harness allowing my legs to work and letting my groin breathe and blood flow.. without the braces i walk “bow legged” (like a cowboy.. squashing my bits making me into a cowgirl :( ), also gave a few blood pressure problems.. so next Tuesday i’ll be trying again with the braces on!

NEW RECOVERY AFTER (nearly) 3 YEARS!

All down my left side (since the accident) i’ve always had more sensation.. and this has steadily improved over the past 3 years to approx 77% sensation throughout my body, my right leg has had less sensation but more muscle tone (and more control in the quads).. this morning i’m getting a lot of nerve pain, and down my right side (torso) my stomach muscles ARE BACK IN MY CONTROL! – i have been told that after 18 months/2yrs things stop “recovering”… but as i said 3 YEARS! and i have new motor function back!!

so as i’ve said all the way through alexwillwalkAGAIN

and BOLLOCKS TO NEGATIVE PEOPLE!

Treadmill

600! (assisted) steps – a lot easier than the first time, then a session on the crazy horse.. now i’m riding “in rhythm” with the horse, this (i’m told) is a spinal reflex, (originally i was told “your living in a fantasy world with your goals..”) now i’m being given future goal’s of walking with a frame!! this was an impossibility only a few months back

Believe in yourself! your the only one who truely can

sunday

9miles on my leg bike and 6.3miles using my arms then baked a madra cake with a kg of butter! then boma time with the dog’s

things are happening!

i just had a really good session.. although assisted, i have just taken my first 300 steps in 3yrs! really working my legs and cardio system, my resting heart beat was 73 then after exercise 130, through the session my quads and calf muscles in both legs “heated” up, i could initiate movement through my right leg.. i followed this with a go on the crazy horse – video footage to follow

todays the day!!

alexwillwalkagain

everything has lead me to this point, i’ve “graduated” from my old physio routine and i will attempt my first steps today – it may not be successful at first.. but… i’ve come this far - im going to walk again

TATTOO!

i have had more tattooing done.. tomorrow morning i have physio, i’m trying the treadmill so lets see if we’ve managed to kick in any new muscles today! once i have completed this tattoo, i’m going to try acu-puncture next……… and i really really hate needles!!

another day

9 more miles – keeping the legs going.. who knows what tomorrow will bring?? i know i’ve booked a tattoo! but.. other than that no-one knows :P

to date!
since i started documenting my recovery i’ve had 24,518 page views from 90 countries/territories - thank you so much for your support and interest
